A promising healthcare idea does not become part of routine care simply because it works in a demonstration. Services need to consider evidence, costs, integration and the people who will use it. The NHS Innovation Accelerator was established to help innovators work through that wider task.

Support for adoption

Launched in 2015, the programme offers fellows guidance, mentoring and opportunities to learn about introducing innovations within the NHS. The emphasis is on moving from a promising approach towards use in real services, with attention to local circumstances.

Themes in the 2025 discussion

Coverage of the 2025 cohort focused on digital services, prevention and care closer to home. Remote monitoring, decision support and coordination of information were among the areas discussed in relation to pressure on services.

Implementation is part of the innovation

A product or model needs to fit the workflow of the organisation adopting it. Staff training, procurement, evaluation and the ability to maintain the service all influence whether an idea can grow beyond its first setting. National support and local adaptation have different, complementary roles.

Judging progress by practical results

The relevant question is what changes for patients and staff after adoption. A useful innovation should be assessed through its effects in practice, rather than the excitement of a launch. The accelerator model reflects the need for continuing support during that transition.
