Inviting feedback is only the first part of involving a community in healthcare. Dr Neil Churchill's account of work at NHS England explored the harder next step: using those conversations to make practical improvements in general practice.

A place for patient participation

The original article described Patient Participation Groups as a contractual requirement for GP practices. It also recognised that a group alone does not ensure meaningful involvement. Relationships, representation and decisions about what happens next all influence whether feedback becomes useful action.

Learning alongside the community

NHS England's People and Communities team developed a FutureLearn course with GPs, PPG members and the public. It offered tools for connecting practices with local communities and opportunities for participants to discuss their experiences with one another.

Listening in practice

Central Liverpool Primary Care Network, led by Dr Cait Taylor, provided an example through community listening events that informed local action. The course drew on the principles in Working in Partnership with People and Communities: Statutory Guidance and linked engagement with prevention and health inequalities.

The people behind the work

Churchill brought a 25-year voluntary-sector career and his own experience as an unpaid carer to the discussion. The course was described at publication as offering two weeks of free public access, with extended access available to eligible NHS participants. Anyone exploring the course now should consult its provider for current access arrangements.
