The North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care Board set out a Clinical Conditions Strategic Plan covering 12 areas with a substantial effect on local health. The intention was to concentrate effort where regional data showed the greatest need.

Why the region sought a different approach

Chief medical officer Dr Neil O'Brien described shorter lives, greater long-term illness and higher rates of heart disease and lung cancer than elsewhere in England. He also highlighted anxiety and depression affecting one in five people in the region.

Priorities across different ages

Adult priorities included cardiovascular and respiratory health, lung cancer, lower back pain, anxiety and depression. For children and young people, the plan addressed diabetes, asthma, epilepsy, obesity, oral health, autism, learning disabilities and mental health needs.

Support before problems grow

Proposals included dietary and psychological help for childhood obesity, expansion of school mental health support teams and regular health checks for young people with autism or learning disabilities. Smoking cessation and earlier cancer checks were also part of the preventive approach.

Working beyond the clinic

The ICB recognised housing, poverty and crime as influences on health and proposed collaboration with councils and other services. The plan illustrates how regional priorities can bring treatment, prevention and wider local partnerships into the same discussion.
