In May 2025, NHS England reported that HeartFlow Analysis had reached 56 hospitals in England. The technology uses information from a CT scan to produce a personalised three-dimensional view of coronary arteries and support assessment of blood flow.
Information before an invasive test
The aim is to help clinicians understand which patients may need additional investigation or treatment. For some people, that can reduce the need for an invasive coronary angiogram. It remains a tool within clinical decision-making rather than a replacement for assessment.
What the study examined
The NHS announcement described research involving 90,000 patients between 2017 and 2020, with HeartFlow used for nearly 8,000. It reported savings approaching £10 million, associated with avoiding unnecessary tests and procedures.
The relevance to patients and services
More targeted investigation can mean fewer appointments and procedures for people who do not need them, while helping teams identify those who do. The example shows how imaging information can influence the sequence of care as well as the diagnostic decision itself.
